A superb jazz pianist, Oliver Jones' career has included interpretations of many tunes from the American Songbook, Broadway, Hollywood and compositions by many other jazz artists, including his friend and contemporary, the late Oscar Peterson. Oliver is astounding as a soloist, but has played in almost every conceivable musical setting, too ... as vocal accompanist, in trios, quartets and other jazz ensembles, as choir master and out in front of big bands. He has performed all over the world and is an officer of the Order Of Canada.
From the Governor General's Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award - "After a musically eclectic early life in Montréal, Mr. Jones worked as a pop-music director in Puerto Rico, but came home in 1980 determined to stick to jazz. He got a job at Biddles, a legendary downtown club, and his career took off." An understatement to be sure, with twenty three albums and hundreds of performances until his 'retirement' in 1999. Still mentoring upcoming musical talent in his 80's, Mr. Jones is a truly a musicians' musician.
This 1995 album shows Oliver in peak form, accompanied by first-rate session players reading superb charts penned by arranger Rick Wilkins. The title aptly describes the broad selection of material and styles of the tunes on the album. It just gets better every time I listen!
