In 1997, someone took a deep dive into the vaults at Verve Records to assemble this four disc set of 'Jazz Singing'. The collection includes tunes that purists may argue don't qualify as 'Jazz', but it is an excellent representation of the myriad talented vocalists who did their 'Singing' for Verve over the latter half of the 20th century. The collection includes studio recordings and some live performances - recordings made over the period 1952 to 1994 and even includes a couple of well-known instrumentalists demonstrating their vocal chops. Surprisingly, the tunes are not organized in any manner - really just 4 random vocal playlists! Nevertheless, the set gives a good sampling of the large number of vocalists that have had their work released on the label - helping it grow to become the most famous jazz label in the world. Some stars faded quickly, but others built successful careers largely based on contracts with Verve.
