Its doubtful that tuba player Charles Daellenbach had any inkling of the phenomenal success that the ensemble he created in 1970, with four other passionate brass players, would attain. The group, (with only patriarch Daellenbach now remaining from the original ensemble), continues to perform, tour and record to international acclaim. Over the years, there has always been a virtuoso talent in each of the five chairs, but this alone doesn’t explain their continuing appeal. From their initial Baroque repertoire, which they themselves transcribed for brass instruments, (that didn’t even exist in the Baroque era), their music has expanded to include everything from Baroque to Beale Street, to Broadway. The initial disruptive approach, augmented with some humour and audience interaction, and a schedule filled with youth and educational performances, has been a magic formula. There has never been any compromise about the quality of their music – regardless of the genre. The Canadian Brass continues as a highly entertaining and successful brand. What’s not to like about a world-famous group that offers its wonderful music as lossless (.flac), CD quality downloads?
Great Baroque Music, featuring 'Canon' by Pachelbel, on RCA's prestigious RED SEAL classical label was, I believe, the first release of the Canadian Brass on CD (1980). Music that truly has no expiry date!
